Continuing my Cybertronian re-designs, here's grumpy ol' Gears. He was probably the most complicated re-design, especially in terms of interpreting his original toy form (which I usually start off with) into a funky Cybertronian-esque form. What does everyone think?

Nice alt mode!
tried and failed last year to design a Cybertronian Gears.

Nice stuff! I like how you captured his expression. It reminds me of the Generation 1 series where he was always grumpy or mad at something.

I think giving Gears his face back was a good idea... but admittedly, I'm partial to the TFs with more expressive faces. At least the ones with noses and mouths. (In real life, of course, it's the eyes that are the most expressive. But since TF optics are rather static, IMHO it's oddly the opposite with them... seeing the bottom half of the face is more expressive than just having the "eyes" uncovered. Anyhoo. Rambling...)

I tell you, though, if I came around the corner and saw that glower pointed at me, I'd go back in the opposite direction again...

Yeah, it is quite difficult to inject character into TF eyes. The only thing you can really do is alter the shape, but if you get too carried away it can end up looking caricaturish. The lack of pupils makes things difficult too.

The shape of visors can help sell a character's basic attitude (like you say on my Huffer redesign), but basically it's all in the mouth.

Anyway, thanks for the comments, Jeysie! And remember, Gears seems grumpy on the outside, but deep down he's just waiting for someone to reach out to him ;)

Makes the fact that the Animated characters actually have pupils a clever little helping touch, art-wise.

And, hee, hee. True, that he is: [link] :XD:

Very nice the expression on his face is priceless. I'm not sure how he'd transport stuff though. Like the front grille

Thanks dude - the face was a last-minute addition. I'd originally drawn him with a mouth-plate & visor like his toy incarnation, but it really wasn't working; therefore, I resolved to give him a brand new fizzgog! I was pleasantly surprised by how much the drawing changed one he'd got some genuine facial features!

As for his storage capacity, that is a slight problem with this design. However, worry ye not, for I have slightly re-designed him for a Mosaic that I'm working on :)
